SillySally,
Thank you for posting ISF night settings. I'm curious as to your impressions. Can you descirbe what to expect with these settings, especially the gamma changes from the default? I have a dedicated room without windows so I can simulate night viewing all day long. I'm looking for a picture with more contrast than normal, with blacker blacks and more colour vividity (Kind of like the default Sports und User AV settings). Any thoughts? I see your ISF night settings only use a contrast of 16. This, I assume, would be a fairly gray image, right? Or, does a parameter like that not matter much with ISF?

Hi Canucks,
I have two ISF night settings posted. You may want to try the ISF night setting with a contrast of 17. Unless you are using a Pioneer BD51/05 then go with the ISF night contrast setting of 16.
I think you will be happy with these settings from what you say you want.
As far as the lower contrast setting go that i use. The reason why I use contrast of +17 is because I only use my 141 at night for HD movies. I also use a bias back light and have that light mostly surrounded by a shade so only about a 1/4 inch of the bulb is open.
And no this is not a gray washed out picture. It is vivid and well high lighted in the dark scenes.

Any reason why you chose to have such a large hump in your gamma from 0-10IRE?

Any reason why you chose to have such a large hump in your gamma from 0-10IRE?We had this discussion (partially) on the signature owner's thread, and I think it was from the source (because he calibrates from his source) that caused the gamma drop, so he had to compensate.
Edit: Ahhh nevermind, I just looked at the calibration report and saw the same thing. I don't know why it is.

Well nice catch. The 10% IRE reading was from me first run for checking the gamma, before I started to change any settings. All settings were at 0. I was in a hurry so I didn't bother to re check the 10% IRE after I had set my gamma and gray scale. Matter of fact the two higher IRE's (3132) average came out lower than my report shows, and there once more I was short cutting. :uhuh::devil:
Gee I fell like I am back in school and just got nailed by my teacher. :lesson: :nono:

Peter. Is this also the reason why 10IRE looks so bad with the grayscale?

Is this also the reason why 10IRE looks so bad with the grayscale?
Well I would think so.
I just reviewed those two charts and I see what I did. In both cases I was rushing things and if you look at the O IRE You will see what I did. What I did was when I took the first reading I forgot to put the slider on 100% IRE and instead I left the slider on its default of 0 IRE. And as you may know , using I1pro when you try for a read on 0 IRE you get a bad reading. And I am not over confident about the 10% IRE reading either, and given the fact that on the low IRE's the time It takes for I1pro to take a reading, I do not spend much time with 0 and 10% IRE.
Ok I redid the settings so you could see the right charts. And as long as I was doing it , I made some small changes. However on the RGB tracking line the +8 B was flatter from 70 thru 100 IRE. However I was able to low color to +7 and I know that is still high for your liking.

http://www.controlcal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1992&postcount=2Looking at your chart, I don't think you have a linear gamma with your current 9 point settings. Also your upper end it too green.
The color setting is fine for the Sig series....it's not the same as the regular Elites.
Can you post your data file? I'm working on a calibration report that you and others can use to post your results. Should be ready soon.

I have the non pro version of calman.I can't tell anything from your 3rd chart because 0-10 IRE has that hump again. Can you post a straight 11-point run so that I can see where your gamma and RGB channels line up? Where are your gamma numbers for each IRE?

Thanks for taking an Interest. I will rerun the 11PT. The O IRE is because when I run the 11 pt, I first take a 100% IRE reading. The default with calman is 0 IRE and I forgot to change the setting to 100% IRE, as I have said before. I was comparing my charts and numbers to your charts and numbers for your settings of the 151 ISF night. I found that comparison interesting. Thanks for posting your charts and numbers.

Silly Sally,
I just tried youre settings for the 141 with the Oppo and everything looks good, except when I tried using the Spears & Munsil bluray that comes with the Oppo, I had to make a little adjustment, to pass the brightness and contrast tests (the one with the black screen with black bars and the one with the white screen with white bars). I chose to adjust using the Oppo, I went to: Brightness +2 and Contrast -2. Is this fine, or should I set them at 0 or should I do this adjustments through controlcal on the monitor itself? Thank you very much! Unfortunately, since I am in Mexico, getting a profesional to calibrate is not an option (at least not a viable one), sucks for me... Anyways, I appreciate the posted settings!

Also in the clipping screen, there appears to be clipping in the R G and B. I am a newbie so please bear with me, I tried adjusting this with the contrast but no matter how low I went that would'nt solve the matter so I left it at -2 for now in the Oppo.

One way to test it for you set-up is with a sharpness pattern from
a calibration disc. I think you will be ok anywhere between -15
and -10.:)
Remember, set it to were it looks best to you.

Yes that's fine.

Also in the clipping screen, there appears to be clipping in the R G and B. I am a newbie so please bear with me, I tried adjusting this with the contrast but no matter how low I went that would'nt solve the matter so I left it at -2 for now in the Oppo.
Here's the thing. S&M is a good calibration disc, however It is not exact.
I can understand why you have lowered the contrast. The Oppo pushes the high whites to there limit and maybe a little farther.
What I have found is that for my eyes, changing the HDMI color space, Enhancer Mode and sharpness is a better way to go. There are other tweaks you can try by changing your HDMI cable and power cord.
I like the Monster HD1000 HDMI cable, also the shorter the run the better. Plus I connect my HDMI cable directly to my 141. That said in a majority of case's you should be fine using a A/V, as long as there is a pass thought option.

Hello,
Im curious, did you do any break in before attempting those settings? Thanks!
Yes I did. For about 140 hours, and the reason why is I only use my 141 for mostly letter box films. Also I used D-Nice break-in settings but I lowered the contrast and color settings.

i dunno anymore. :)
i don't have a disk but i plugged in ss's panasonic settings tonight and they look great to me. :)
also, now i'm wondering if different settings are necessary for bluray and hd-tv...
edit: i just set my hdtv size to full instead of dot by dot - any other settings you guys change for hdtv?
My Panasonic settings are set to dot by dot. This setting is for Blu Ray (1080P@24) only.
However full should work, see what you like best.

I think Peter(sillysally) uses an OPPO BDP83 for a Blu-ray player and he
states it requires a sharpness setting of -9 after the last firmware.
Yes that is correct. However the sharpness setting is something you can use your S&M disc for. I do.
Thanks Petmic10 for helping out hear. :)

sorry, i wasn't clear - i was talking about watching cable television in hd.
i have my bluray set to dot by dot, but this was causing problems around the edges of my screen while watching cable tv, so switching it to full helped.
i was wondering if people are making any other changes to the blu ray settings when they watch tv.
thanks again for the settings.

Ok, now I understand. And yes you don't want dot-by-dot for cable TV. However these settings should work ok with your cable.

Thank you for all you're replies, I have my monitor back in the shipping box for a couple of days while the painters come in and paint the room and drapes get installed, etc, I really don't want anyone to touch my monitor, when i have it back out I'll continue with the break in and experiment a little with the settings on the Oppo. I have about 70 hours of break in using DNice's settings on my monitor, I guess I'm about halfway there. Anyways, I appreciate the replies!

Hello All:
I have a single HDMI connection to my 141 from my receiver. All sources are connected to the receiver inputs. From reading, I understand that the dot by dot setting is best for BluRay, but not cable HD.
Since I only have one input to calibrate on my 141, should I change the dot by dot setting to something else?
I watch a LOT of HD FIOS, and Netflix downloads on a Roku box.
Please advise, and thank you!

You do know that you have two memory ISF settings for each HDMI port, day/night.
Yes I would think Full1 would be better for your downloads and streaming.
dot by dot is best for Blu Ray films 1080P@24.
I don't know what is going on with your receiver, but when you are using your ISF mode your 141 should switch over to Full1 from dot-by-dot. You can check to see what is being displayed on your screen by pressing your A/V selection button Only Once on your remote.

Pioneer 9G Elite Monitor 141 ISF-Night Settings.
I used a Oppo BDP-83 for these settings
Oppo Setup for Blu Ray films 1080P@24
Picture Adjustemnt-Default
Primary Output-HDMI
TV Aspect Ratio-16:9 Wide
TV System-NTSC
Output Resolution- 1080P or Source Direct
1080p24 Output-On
DVD 24p Conversion-Off
HDMI Options-Film Bias Mode, Cue corection Off,
Color Space YCbCr 4:2:2, Deep Color Off (dithered), Demo Mode Off,
A/V Sync 0
Oppo setup for SD Films Auto with these settings.
Output Resolution-Auto
All the rest of the Oppo setup settings are the same.
.............
Is there a way to have different settings in the oppo for viewing DVD's and blu rays or do you have to do all of that each time you watch a DVD vs. a Blu Ray?? I couldn't seem to find a way to post both settings so that it automatically switches, how do you do this? Thank you!

Just use Output Resolution- Auto setting with your Oppo. Just leave the auto setting for both BD/SD if you are using your ISF mode. That is the easiest way to go.

If you are asking about non ISF mode settings then you could try these.

I recently entered the ControlCal world with my 141.
Start off by saying thanks to everyone taking the time to share their experience and settings.
I have been trying your various settings and definitely see an improvement over Pure.
I have been playing with it and I notice that I personally prefer to crank the contrast up to 38 and sharpness up to about -7… I notice that everyone else has really low contrast settings and sharpness at around -15… I notice much more detail at -7 and the picture looks pretty dry at 17 contrast… Am I crazy or have some setting wrong?
I am using a PS3 fed into a Yamaha 1800 AVR into the 141.
I have Superwhite on and RGB set to Full (I also notice that some people set it to limited, such as D-Nice, and some people to full… I just notice a difference right away when I put it in Full vs Limited).

My settings are for low light, if you want you can go to +27 for contrast.
There is a good reason why D-Nice doesn't use Supper White and he is 100% right about that. Also I would use 4:4:4 or 4:2:2.
Once more there are good reasons why we use -15 for sharpness with are settings.
I am sure if you have D-Nice come and do a full calibration you might at first say the picture looks a little, but after he shows you why your settings are wrong you will see much better everything.

bear with me as I am an extreme newby to this calibration stuff. I input these settings last night to my cable/dvd input and it seems now that if a channel is not in HD it displays with large black bars on all sides. Is this supposed to be the case? If so, what adjustment affects this. Also, is there some guide that explains exactly what each adjustment does?
My setup in case that may need to be changed as well:
HD Cable and Sony bpd-550 hdmi into receiver, output from receiver to TV
PS3 direct hdmi to TV (receiver only has two hdmi inputs)
One last question, should each source be directly connected to the TV to adjust the calibration for each input independently? Thanks for all the help.

My settings are for BD films and are set to Dot-To-Dot.
So try standard, and depending on your cable box you may want to use RGB.
My setup in case that may need to be changed as well:
HD Cable and Sony bpd-550 hdmi into receiver, output from receiver to TV
PS3 direct hdmi to TV (receiver only has two hdmi inputs)
Make sure you turn off whiter than white setting in your PS3
One last question, should each source be directly connected to the TV to adjust the calibration for each input independently? Thanks for all the help.
I would but that's up to you and your ISF calibrator.

I wanted to try the new AVC DVD 2.a calibration disc, Calman 3.7 and Pioneers new firmware 2.68a. Didn't spend much time on this ISF night Calibration but these settings look good.
The second set of settings and report where done the same night. I am showing the second set just to show you what a few small changes can affect a calibration.
The last set of settings I shifted all of the primary's.
