What is the best value for setting white level (contrast) using the 100 ISE pattern to begin calibration for my Pioneer 428XD?
GREYSCALE & COLOUR CALIBRATION FOR DUMMIES says the values for plasmas have to be 30-40 ftL.
But what should I choose between 30 and 40? I watch films in totaly dark room.
Thank you!

If you have complete light control, I suggest 30 (maybe 30-32) ftL.

And if there is some ambient light?

Well, that is based on your environment and personal taste.. I have my isf Day set currently at 44fL (been testing between 42-48fL) but I don't have light control and do have large windows...

Still waiting for my sensor and reading this great forum...
Another newbie question:
What should the lighting conditions be for isf-day and isf-night?

The labels isf Day and isf Night are really meaningless and unfortunately we can't change the names.
Now, many people do use a isf Night memory for critical viewing (approx. 30fL) when they have light control in the room and then use the isf Day memory for more light output when needed/wanted. Others may configure isf Night for Blu-ray and isf Day for SD or B&W Films.

Thank you, what I don't understand is, isf-night is done in a room with no or some ambient light, what about isf-day (for day view)?

Well, if you have windows and watch during the day (with shades open), use isf Day to calibrate for that environment (actually do the calibration during the day/shades open) and calibrate for higher light output.. I have my isf Day set at 44fL now (have tested 42-48), my isf Night is set around 30-31fL....
I know a couple people use isf Day just to increase brightness even when watching in a dark/light controlled room -- they like to watch with more brightness sometimes...
The Contrast Control will be bumped up (I still would not set Contrast >40 though)..
btw, you would still need to properly calibrate several of the other Controls (i.e. RGB Highs/Lows, CMS) with a change in the Contrast Control... you simply don't increase Contrast from a calibrated reference (for critical viewing) memory like isf Night for isf Day (you should do a complete calibration again for isf Day)...
