Hello to everyone, I'm back again after a long period... Pioneer quitting the scene has awaken me (can you say that in English) from my lethargy..
So I was thinking about the future..... maybe 3/4 years before other manufacturers would deliver on-par panels such as the KRP series.... who knows.... SED is dead, OLED uncertain on it's time-line.....
Could it be worth it to spend 7000€ on such a panel?
I was very satisfied about my 508, but..... things change quickly!
I had some concerns about the "60 panel being to big, my viewing room has some constrains, such a maximum viewing distance of 3,35mt, too close for TV/Satellite sources.
But this morning I went into a Pioneer shop and played for about one hour with the dude with Sat/SD sources and I was really impressed about the quality of the scaler/deinterlacer...
Hunger grows!
While chatting with the clerk about prices and options, I was told to couple the KRP with a DVDO Edge unit... he spent very good words about this unit and was wondering if really it helps particularly on TV/SAT sources.....
Moreover was wondering what capabilities has this VP, on the calibration side.... does this unit addresses the "luminance" factor or the per-color separated saturation controls?
I'd like to hear from you.

It looks like the DVD Edge is missing a CMS!

It's about time you are posting again... :D
If I was you, I would not buy the Edge up front, you can always add it later.

Hi there to you , mister :-)
Well the point was about having some benefits switching to a bigger screen, while trying to keep artifacts as little as possible and improving the calibration process (CMS).
If the scaler works much better than Pio's built in electronics, I could focus on other aspects, like calibration ;-)
Anyhow the Edge is missing a CMS, so....

The Edge doesn't have a CMS..
From their website:
Will the EDGE improve the picture quality of standard definition channels from my satellite system (DSS)?
Picture improvement of heavily compressed standard, and even high, definition satellite channels is often very subjective, and depends to a great deal on exactly which aspects of the image are objectionable. The EDGE does incorporate three new technologies that do specifically address this issue: Mosquito Noise Reduction, Fine Detail Enhancement and Edge Enhancement.
One artifact of compression is mosquito noise. This kind of compression noise is apparent along the edges of compressed images, especially text. Anchor Bay's Mosquito Noise Reduction can significantly reduce this noise providing an appreciably better picture. Additionally, Anchor Bay's Fine Detail Enhancement can extract fine details in the image that were masked by this compression. Finally, Anchor Bay's Edge Enhancement can improve the perceived sharpness of the image without adding additional ringing.
There's nothing over the Pioneer there...
Now, I've read Posts where people like the combo, I've also read from Professionals that you cannot label the Edge a VP. Just basic Picture controls, nothing for grayscale, gamma etc..
The Edge does have patterns that CalMAN can use during calibration and I have to admit, many over in Europe seem to like the Edge.

Would be nice to know the Edge helps a lot on poor quality channels.
If so, buy the KRP-600A without thinking (7000€) and concentrate on calibration!
BTW. there's a guy on the italian forum that states he can calibrate the KRP using a Display LT :p...
Did you read? (They also talk about this forum).... here (http://www.avmagazine.it/forum/showthread.php?t=120580)
Eventually try Google translate!

I'll take a look..
Do you know AudioQuality.it (http://www.audioquality.it/)? They have ControlCAL.. :D
I use Google Translate all the time (though it got me in trouble once, I need to be careful ).
I'm over at the Forum (ControlCAL Thread) in France..

ahh, yes ev666il is a member here, he gave me the link to that thread in Italy. I have several Italian Pioneer Owners who have ControlCAL now. gichiocci (gchiocci at the Italian Forum I think) has ControlCAL..
I need to get active there, hopefully Google Translate is accurate for Italian -> English... :)

I was part of the Edge beta. Personally I don't feel it adds much of anything, if not more complication, i.e. another processing unit in the path, when attached to the Kuro. Before the the firmware update it's abilities actually lagged behind the Kuro's, but it now can pass frame-rates and other stuff that allow the user to take advantage of the Kuro's 72hz Purecinema processing. My source is DirecTv and I only had it attached inline with the Kuro for roughly a week during testing, and then moved it to an older Pioneer panel which could benefit from its processing.
I personally was hoping it would really enhance the Formula 1 world feed but the Kuro itself produced an equivalent picture with a few enhancements enabled. I would see if you can find someone using this combination with your source since the type and level of compression, along with all the fun things that come with it, will be different than DTV and therefore you may stand to gain more from the Edge. But i wouldn't expect drastic improvements if that's what you're after.
Would be nice to know the Edge helps a lot on poor quality channels.

Oh well, I'd better find someone with the KRP and the Edge :-D
