Default USB-To-Serial Question

I just borrowed a USB-To-Serial cable and a female-to-female rs-232 pass-through adapter and configured my TV. I need to make a change so I bought the USB cable, but the female-to-female adapter that the company sent me is a null modem not just a pass through. I know what a null modem is, but will it work in this situation? I haven't plugged it in because I didn't want to screw anything up. Anyone used on on their Pioneer plasma?

Thanks in advance!
